Samsung American Legion Scholarship
The Samsung Group, an international electronics company, has endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million dollars to be administered by The American Legion.
Eligibility—student must be a high school junior and a direct descendant (i.e. child, grandchild, great-grandchild or a legally adopted child of a U.S. veteran who served during a period of war). Students must participate in and complete either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program. (NOTE – A stepchild is not eligible.)
An application will be given to each participant in the Girls State programs. Each American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program selects one application to forward to the American Legion National Headquarters. These applications become “National Finalists” and are reviewed by the National Selection Committee each fall. National winners usually receive a $20,000 scholarship. Each “National Finalist” will receive a $1,000 scholarship if he/she is not selected as a National scholarship winner.
The 2010 Samsund American Legion Scholarship Program is ready for another great year. Over the past 12 years we have awarded over $3.8 million in scholarships. For 2010, we should be able to award eleven $20,000 scholarships. The remaining National finalist will each receive $1,000 scholarships.
Each Boys State and Girls State program will be making its finalist selection using the following criteria: 1 -- Academic Record 2 -- Involvement in School Activities 3 -- Involvement in community activities 4 -- community service 5 -- Financial need 6 -- Additional bonus points in the selection process will be awarded to descendants of U.S.Veterans of the Korean War.
DD214 for proof of Veteran service must accompany all applications. This is a COPY of DD214 not the original.
Application is available on this site under Resources of Girls State. The application is available as a PDF file in Adobe Acrobat. Also available on Legion National Site at www.legion.org and National Auxiliary Site at www.legion-aux.org if unable to open at this site.
